What does it mean to be an ally?

This Pride Month, PRA Group Employees Seek to Strengthen Allyship During Nonprofit Seminar

At PRA Group, we are successful because we work together as a team. It’s one of our core values. Our employees are encouraged to integrate workflows vertically and horizontally throughout the organization to fulfill important business tasks and achieve their goals.

The emphasis we place on working together makes it important to celebrate our differences and the things we can learn from one another along the way. June is Pride Month, and although as a global company we recognize that these periods of celebration occur at different times in different countries, it is a special time for many of our colleagues and business partners in the LGBTQ+ community.

We hosted Alex Rago (they/them) of LGBT Life Center for our latest “PRA Talks” session to educate our employees and celebrate Pride Month at work. LGBT Life Center promotes health and wellness, family and community support, and education to empower LGBTQ+ communities and those affected by HIV. The central theme of Rago’s discussion was being an ally and identifying ways to advocate for and work together well with LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Early on in their presentation, Rago, who holds a Master of Science in Human Sexuality Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, defined allyship as “an active, consistent, and arduous practice of unlearning and re-evaluating, in which a person in a position of privilege and power seeks to operate in solidarity with a marginalized group.”

The speaker outlined a duty to “turn the spotlight we are given away from ourselves and towards the voices of those who are continuously marginalized, silenced, and ignored,” as one of the responsibilities of allyship.

We believe this session, coupled with participation from our diverse and inclusive workforce, will continue to build community, advocate for equality, inspire people to embrace their authentic selves, create a platform for discussion, education, and allow us to foster a more inclusive environment for everyone.
