Mental Emotional Well-Being Employee Resource Group Champions Cause

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 7, 2023 – The number of pediatric mental health outpatient visits at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) has increased from 11,436 in fiscal year 2018 to more than 43,000 in fiscal year 2023, and it is expected to continue to rise. CHKD, Virginia’s only freestanding, full-service children’s hospital, is committed to helping children with mental health concerns by providing intensive and immersive care to pediatric patients throughout the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

CHKD’s new pediatric mental health hospital and outpatient center transforms pediatric mental health services through a design that promotes creativity, physical activity, play, education and recovery—not only for children, but also for their families—all while upholding the highest standards of medical care and patient safety, accessibility and privacy.

Children undergoing treatment for psychiatric conditions have unique needs on their way to recovery, so the toys they play with and the clothing they wear must accommodate CHKD’s safety guidelines. Employees from PRA Group’s Mental and Emotional Well-Being Employee Resource Group (ERG) partnered with CHKD to meet that need by collecting safe toys, supplies and clothing items, which they dropped off at the Children’s Pavilion this afternoon.

PRA Group is a Norfolk-based global financial services company. It launched its Mental and Emotional Well-Being ERG in May of 2022.

“It is empowering to know that I always have a safe space and supportive community in PRA Group’s Mental and Emotional Well-Being ERG. Being able to build upon that to help children in our community adds an entirely new, rewarding dimension to what we can accomplish as a group,” said Meghan Massie, assistant vice president of software engineering.

Through its Lighting the Way campaign, CHKD has nearly achieved its goal of raising $75 million toward its new pediatric mental health hospital and outpatient center, of which PRA Group is a sponsor.

“It’s heartbreaking to think about what these children are going through. I am thrilled that we are all able to come together in support of CHKD and the patients it serves,” added Diana Macon, government relations policy advisor and co-chair of the Mental and Emotional Well-Being ERG.

Since construction was completed and the doors opened on Sept. 30, 2022, the center has provided beds to more than 600 inpatients.

As it nears the end of the capital campaign, CHKD has made several recent strides to enhance its service to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

  • CHKD launched programs to help bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient services, moving patients from full-time supervision to sustainable check-ins and continued care.
  • It also opened offices in Children’s Pavilion for Sports Medicine and General Academic Pediatrics, the last of which serves Norfolk’s most vulnerable pediatric patients, most of whom are insured by Medicaid.
  • It completed construction on a new wing of the Emergency Department, to better help patients seeking emergency mental health care.

“Our community’s generosity has made it possible for us to bridge gaps in care and increase mental health services available to children,” said Katie Fletcher, director of philanthropy operations and partnerships at CHKD. “We are grateful to PRA Group for helping us ensure we keep these children comfortable and safe throughout their recovery.”
